Most people who call about a ceramic coating ask the same two questions: how long does it last, and what does it cost. The better first question is what your paint looks like right now. A coating is clear. Whatever sits under it, good or bad, is what you will be looking at for the next several years.
That is why every coating we install in Eau Claire starts with paint prep, and why our longer packages start with full paint correction. Here is what that step actually does, how much of it your car needs, and how it fits into the packages we offer.
Yes, almost always. A ceramic coating bonds to the clear coat and locks in whatever is underneath it, including swirl marks, light scratches, and haze. Paint correction removes those defects first with machine polishing, so the coating seals in a clean, glossy finish instead of preserving the flaws for years.
When paint looks tired, the color usually is not the problem. The problem is thousands of tiny scratches and swirls in the clear coat, most of them left by years of washing with the wrong mitt or a gas station brush. Each one scatters light a little. Together they make a black truck look gray in the sun and turn a sharp reflection into a blur.
Correction is controlled machine polishing that levels the clear coat just enough to take those defects out. Done right, colors deepen, reflections sharpen, and the vehicle looks years newer. Our correction work covers:
A wax wears off in weeks, so a swirled finish under wax is a short-term problem. A ceramic coating is different. It cures into a hard layer that is chemically bonded to the paint and rated to last for years. Seal a flawed finish under it and you have locked those flaws in for the life of the coating.
The coating also adds gloss and slickness, which makes the surface look like glass. That is great on corrected paint. On swirled paint, the extra clarity can make every defect easier to see. Correction first is the difference between a coating that looks like a showroom finish and one that just looks shiny and scratched.
Not every vehicle needs the same amount of work. We decide after we look at the paint under proper lighting, not before.
One-step enhancement. A single polishing pass that boosts gloss and removes lighter defects. This is often the right call for a newer vehicle, or one that has been washed carefully.
Multi-stage correction. Several polishing steps to remove deeper swirls and scratches for a near-flawless finish. This is common on a daily driver that has seen a few years of Wisconsin winters, road salt, and automatic car washes.
One honest limit: some scratches have cut all the way through the clear coat. Those can usually be improved, but not always erased. We remove as much defect as the clear coat safely allows, and we tell you up front what is realistic for your paint.
Every ceramic coating we apply is a premium Gtechniq or IGL product, cured in a climate-controlled space and backed by a manufacturer warranty. The amount of paint prep built into each package scales with how long the coating is meant to last:
Final pricing depends on your vehicle's size and condition. You get a clear, exact quote at your consultation before any work begins. If you are already planning paint protection film for the front end, ask about bundling it. The film takes the rock chips, and the coating on top keeps everything glossy and easy to wash.
First, we hand wash the vehicle and chemically decontaminate it, including iron fallout and tar removal. Next comes the correction, panel by panel, until the paint is where it should be. Then we panel-wipe the surface so the coating bonds cleanly, apply it, and let it cure properly. You leave with aftercare guidance and a simple maintenance plan.
We give you a clear timeline when you book. Correction is the slow, careful part of the job, and it is not a step we rush.
